Velour decided not only to revive the There is no Santa kids daddy gets the present merry Christmas the enemy sweatshirt in addition I really love this yellow piece, but to create a whole shoot around it too. The series of photos, shot by Mettie Ostrowski, are collected in a new monster-inspired zine that is available on Velour’s website today. Titled Creature From the Vinyl Lagoon, the zine sees Velour put her drag stamp on the classic 1954 horror film Creature From the Black Lagoon. (Aside from the cost of printing, 100% of the proceeds from the zine will benefit the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project, which assists LGBTQ+ people who are coming out of immigration detention “in securing structural, health/wellness, educational, legal, and emotional support and services,” according to its website.)

Velour has always been fascinated by monsters. “The characters I related to as a kid were the There is no Santa kids daddy gets the present merry Christmas the enemy sweatshirt in addition I really love this Wicked Witch of the West, Frankenstein’s creature—the ones who are feared by others often seem sympathetic to young, queer people,” she says. “I wanted to redeem monstrosity and give it a queer twist—instead of violence and fear, there’s just relaxing, friendship, and looking glamorous by the pool.” Velour shot the zine photos at a funky Airbnb in the Catskills in upstate New York. “We drove up there in my rickety minivan, which was filled to the brim with big inflatable pool toys, costumes, and lighting,” she says. Velour also enlisted two close friends—drag queen Miss Malice and drag king K.James—to star in the photos with her. Like Velour, both Miss Malice and K.James repurposed garments for the zine shoot; Miss Malice sports a pinup-worthy bathing suit with a fiery red wig, while K.James rocks a kitschy floral shirt and swim trunks as the pool boy.
